To Eva, freedom means living without fear and having the chance to build a better life.
Eva and her family came to Australia seeking asylum when their country of origin, Ukraine, was no longer safe. They needed a place where they could live without fear, and they found that in Australia.
Their early days in Australia were challenging, but they received vital support from Uniting’s Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre and their local church community who provided food, shelter, and a sense of belonging.
Eva says her journey as an asylum seeker with her family profoundly shaped who she is and what she stands for.
“The hardships we endured, the uncertainty, and the resilience we had to find within ourselves have given me a deep empathy for others in similar situations,” she said.
Today, Eva works with Uniting, helping to share her expertise, knowledge and lived experience.
“It’s about giving back, ensuring that others have the support and understanding they need as they navigate their own challenges,” she said.
