We recently opened our new $18 million community housing development in Wangaratta providing much needed affordable accommodation for people living in the region.
The new development comprises 44 one, two and three-bedroom units and is the first Uniting Housing project delivered under the Victorian Government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.
It provides safe, stable and secure homes for around 90 people on the Victorian Housing Register, with the first residents moving in early March.
Victorian Housing Minister, Harriet Shing officially opened the new development on 28 February 2025 and was joined by Treasurer Jaclyn Symes; State Member for Ovens, Tim McCurdy; Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines; City of Wangaratta Mayor, Cr Irene Grant; Uniting Vic.Tas Deputy Chair Reverend Alistair Macrae and Wangaratta Uniting Church Minister, Rev Hoon You.
Uniting Vic.Tas CEO, Bronwyn Pike said Uniting was proud to contribute to increasing the supply of affordable homes in regional Victoria.
“Over five years ago we committed to redevelop this site and replace ageing buildings, which were no longer fit for purpose, with a new modern community housing development,” she said.
Uniting General Manager Housing and Property, Kristie Looney said the new development provided high-quality, modern architecturally designed units close to amenities.
“The housing development has been designed to integrate with the local environment and reflect the character and heritage of surrounding buildings,” she said.
Uniting Vic.Tas Deputy Chair Reverend Alistair Macrae spoke about the importance of housing in creating opportunity and providing safety and a sense of belonging.
“We’re here to celebrate – not just the completion of more homes – but also of an important step in Uniting’s commitment to more community and affordable housing in Victoria,” Reverend Macrae said.
One of our new residents said it was great to be near all the services they need.
“It will be nice to have a secure home in a central location where it’s easy to access the social aspects, my GP and other medical needs. And it’s much easier to attend to those things when you know you have a home to go to.”
As well as the funding through the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build, the project will also benefit from Housing Australia’s Future Fund that supports operations post construction.
